Hawaii tourism boosted by films and TV shows

The number of people visiting Hawaii has increased recently which may be down to it being a popular filming location, an expert has said.

Hawaii has long been a sought-after destination for holidaymakers due to its stunning array of natural beauty spots and breathtaking beaches.

However, the American state's European tourism board has said that the island is now even more popular thanks to it being exposed in blockbuster Hollywood films and hit television series'.

According to Bronwen Batley, associate director of Hawaii Tourism Europe, the publicity gained by the island due to world-renowned films such as Pirates of the Caribbean and shows such as Lost being shot here has helped boost the number of visitors travelling there.

The Hawaii Tourist Authority recently reported that arrivals to the islands by were up by 3.7 per cent during the first four months of 2010, while the number of air and cruise tourist in April alone stood at 552,194 - a 1.9 per cent rise on the figures for the corresponding month last year.

This monthly number of visitors has now increased for the last five months in succession and Ms Batley partly attributes this to people wishing to see the islands with their own eyes after watching it at the cinema or on television.

Hawaii offers "dramatic cliffs, huge rainforests and stunning beaches", said the official. She added that "there is possibly nowhere else in the world where such a diverse mix of scenery can be found".

There is something for everyone in Hawaii, with attractions ranging from Pearl Harbor to the Mauna Kea mountain.

Anyone considering a trip to the islands should take out travel insurance before leaving the UK.
