Have a jungle adventure in Thailand

Get up close and personal with an elephant on your jungle break

A jungle adventure could be just the thing for gap year travellers who would like to go off the beaten path.

Backpackers looking for more from a trip to south-east Asia than a lazy beach holiday should head inland for a jungle adventure.

With the country home to some of the region's most diverse rainforests, intrepid travellers keen to get off the beaten track have the opportunity to get back to nature on the back of an Asian elephant, with the region of Khao Lak and its dense jungle and white-water rivers the perfect place to get acquainted with these magnificent animals.

These special safaris offer visitors to Thailand the opportunity to explore the very heart of the jungle and to get up-close to some of the country's colourful wildlife, with the elephants' keepers – or mahouts – often also serving as local guides.

According to one traveller, writing for the Warwick Daily Times, this "exotic" adventure enables travellers to see Thailand in the style of Indiana Jones, while also learning of the close bond formed between the elephants and their owners, who are usually brought together as youngsters and grow up grow up alongside one another.

However, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) continues to advise on the importance of travel insurance, particularly for those travellers keen to enjoy an adventure.

For example, a serious fall in the jungle could leave a holidaymaker with a medical bill of thousands of pounds should they be required to be flown home by air ambulance. ADNFCR-2301-ID-19351733-ADNFCR
