The German city of Hamburg offers travellers the possibility of a unique inner-city experience, an expert has said.
The northern German urban area of Hamburg offers visitors the potential of a unique experience, the city's tourist board has said.
Hamburg is an unusual major European city in so far as it is built around a large lake in the very centre of the metropolis. It is also one of the continent's primary shipping hubs, meaning that the city retains a true maritime feel.
However, Hamburg is not just simply a seaside-type resort as it combines both historically-significant and stunning contemporary architecture in order to offer the perfect mixture of attractions for sightseers.
Nevertheless, to get a true taste of what Hamburg is all about, holidaymakers should take to the water on one of the city-centre lakes, according to Bea Rottgers, press relations officer at the Hamburg Tourist Board.
"By either doing a harbour tour or taking the public ferry in the harbour one can experience the city from the waterside and see all the highlights while enjoying a relaxing boat ride," she remarked.
The city also boasts one of Europe's most impressive football stadiums - the municipal HSH Nordbank Arena, which has a capacity of more than 60,000 and is home to the city's major club Hamburger SV.
This venue - which was used during the 2006 World Cup and is set in a woodland area - played host to the 2010 Europa League final, an event which, according to HotStats, caused a sharp rise in hotel room occupancy rates.
