Guatemala is 'an ideal budget destination'
Mayan Guatemala has been recommended as an ideal destination for travellers on a budget by a travel writer.
The country is "scenically beautiful, rich in history and very cheap," wrote Alessia Horwich, in the Independent
Ms Horwich said Guatemala has something for everyone, from relaxing black sand beaches on the Pacific coast to water sports and paragliding at Lake Atitla.
For lovers of history, the destination offers a cornucopia of ancient sites such as the Tikal national park which was occupied by the Mayan civilisation between 600 BC and 1000 AD and is home to six uncovered temples.
Antigua Guatemala, the country's former capital, was voted "best city in the world" 2009 by readers of Wanderlust magazine.
Lonely Planet said the city that is situated in the middle of three volcanoes - Agua, Fuego and Acatenango - was a must-see and there is a "photo opportunity at every turn".
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advise visitors to Guatemala to ensure they have fully comprehensive travel insurance as hospitals will sometimes only provide medical treatment if they are satisfied patients are medically covered.
