Many people are expected to drive abroad over the bank holiday.
Families keen to save a few pennies during the upcoming bank holidays might consider driving to their destination rather than flying.
According to Green Flag, this method of transport can offer many advantages, but it is important to take out breakdown cover and guard against any mishaps in order to have a stress-free holiday.
The company claims the average cost of flights to Barcelona for a family of four can set people back approximately £1,000, while driving there would be around half the price.
Those who do decide to drive abroad must also ensure they are up to date with the rules and regulations on the roads of their destination.
For example, a new speed limit of 68 mph has been introduced in Spain, which has been enforced in order to save people money on fuel.
Head of Green Flag Henry Topham says: "It is vital that motorists ensure they have breakdown cover in place as the costs of recovery can end up making a holiday on a shoestring a very expensive getaway."
There was a 125 per cent rise in European breakdown incidents on Easter Sunday last year, compared with the same period in 2009.
Green Flag predicts the warm weather and timing of the bank holiday this year will result in a 116 per cent increase in call-outs.
Many travel insurance policyholders and others are facing a long break from work, as booking just three days off during the two bank holidays offers most employees an 11-day extended break.
