Gap year travellers 'urged to do their research'
Young people considering embarking on a gap year should make sure they research the company they decide to travel with, it has been advised.
"Travellers should go with a reputable gap year organisation and with someone who is a member of the Year Out Group for instance, which helps regulate people who take travellers overseas," said Paul Martin, development manager at Gapforce.
Mr Martin went on to say that by looking up the company on Google, they can check that they have not had any bad incidents in the past and ensure that they have a good track record.
He added that although there is excitement in heading off on the adventures of a gap year, there are certain risks that travellers should avoid.
People can educate themselves about where they are travelling to in order to avoid putting themselves in any unpleasant situations and appropriate inoculations should also be sought, he explained.
According to the Year Out Group, South Africa, Ecuador and Canada are the most popular places for people taking a structured gap year.
Taking out backpacker insurance was named as one of the top priorities for people taking a gap year by healthy living website realbuzz.com.
