Mozambique could be a viable option for gap year holidaymakers, according to one expert.
Gap year travellers looking for a new destination to explore may want to consider Mozambique.
According to Bradt Travel Guides author Philip Briggs, the country has much to offer backpackers looking for an affordable stint in Africa.
He explains that Mozambique boasts a Portuguese legacy that goes back 500 years and could be particularly ideal for those taking in several African destinations on a single trip.
Among the highlights of a visit to Mozambique are the former capital Ilha de Mozambique, which has a "wealth of centuries-old buildings", as well as the "bustling" city of Maputo and coastal destinations like the Bazaruto and Querimba Islands, Mr Briggs comments.
"Most gap year types would visit it as part of a longer African trip, possibly combined with South Africa, Malawi, Zambia and/or Tanzania," he says.
Those thinking about visiting Mozambique may want to invest in
gap year travel insurance for peace of mind.
The Mozambican government approved the investment of some $900 million (£591 million) in its tourism sector last year.
