Gap year travellers 'need to plan properly'
Young people planning to take a gap year need to make sure they "plan properly" before they go abroad, according to a travel money expert.
Peter Harrison of Moneysupermarket.com asserted that having a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place is a must for backpackers.
He stressed that they should also make sure they are covered for any activity they want to participate in while they are on holiday, including extreme sports such as scuba diving, jet skiing and bungee jumping.
"Travellers should also ensure their cover limit takes account of expensive single items such as a camera or an iPod," Mr Harrison noted, adding that most insurers generally do not cover loss or theft of these items unless they are adequately secured.
Furthermore, he added that it is important for backpackers to "tread carefully" while on the party scene, as many travel insurance policies have clauses relating to alcohol consumption.
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office recommends that people who plan to take more than one trip in the next 12 months may wish to consider a multi-trip travel insurance policy, which may save them money and time.
