The Met Office has issued a warning that heavy rain could affect the south-east of England.
Heavy rain and flooding could cause travel problems in south-east England today (January 6th), if warnings that have been put in place are realised.
The
Met Office has predicted significant amounts of precipitation in eastern areas such as Essex, Thurrock and Southend-on-Sea where some 25 mm could accumulate.
A similar situation has been forecast in Greater London, Kent and Surrey, where residents have been advised to take extra care while travelling and heed advice from bodies such as the
Environment Agency (EA) and Floodline where applicable.
The EA has issued alerts for the capital's boroughs of Lewisham, Greenwich, Croydon and Bromley as a result of river levels rapidly rising in the Petts Wood area. Low-lying roads in this district and the Kyd Brook region could be flooded where the water overflows the banks.
What's more, people living or commuting alongside the River Thames in Richmond might find the tide is particularly high this evening (from 16:30 GMT onwards). Potential flooding has been predicted at the Putney Embankment, Chiswick Mall and Friars Lane, as well as other locations in the area.
Travel insurance policyholders expecting to come in or out of the area in coming hours could do well to keep abreast of weather updates and travel information before setting off.
People living in Wales may see a similar situation tomorrow (January 7th), as the Met Office has set its warning level to Be Aware for the country, which could see more rain and heavy and drifting snow affect parts of the UK.
