Travellers heading to Italy during 2011 might take one expert's advice to arrive during a festival period.
Travellers considering a holiday to Italy during 2011 might want to schedule their trip to coincide with one of the country's festivals.
A spokeswoman for the Italian State Tourist Board explained how almost every town and city in the nation has some kind of celebration at different points in the year.
"Carnivals can be a real insight into popular culture in Italy and some have historical contents," the official said.
March might prove a good month for visitors, as Giovedi Grasso - which translates as Fat Thursday - falls on the 3rd of the month, as well as the weekend of Saturday March 5th and 6th.
Shrove Tuesday is a popular event, which takes place on March 8th this year, when local bakers and patisseries sell a variety of treats "eaten during carnival time only", the spokeswoman continued.
Annual trip insurance policyholders may enjoy the fried and baked pastries dusted with icing sugar, or the custard-filled doughnuts or sugar-coated dough balls that are usually plentiful.
Children in Italy often wear fancy-dress costumes during the festivities and visiting youngsters could get involved with the locals by throwing confetti and paper streamers beside the floats that traverse the streets.
Famous figures and personalities are just two of the cultural topics the parades will focus on during the events.
Meanwhile, Carnevale de Foiano, which is scheduled from February 20th - 27th and March 6th - 13th is Italy's oldest occasion of its kind and boasts an effigy of King of the Carnival, Giocondo, as a celebration of the new year and passing of the old.
