Hurricane season is underway in certain parts of the world and travellers must keep up with information surrounding their destination.
Travel insurance policyholders and others heading to southern and eastern parts of the US, the Caribbean and Central America have been warned the Atlantic hurricane season is set to get underway.
Guidance issued by the
Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) suggests the period will run from June to November and anyone thinking of visiting the aforementioned areas should be sure to carry out preparations beforehand.
This includes tuning in to weather reports across a range of media, such as local TV and radio stations, paying close attention to the advice.
Friends and family should also be provided with telephone numbers and details of where their loved ones are staying so they can keep up to date with any developments and forecasts for that particular location.
The FCO advises putting together a first aid kit, as well as a package that includes supplies of food and water alongside other essentials such as radios and torches.
It is also important to generate a list of important numbers, such as travel insurance providers, tour operators, family, airlines and the nearest British Embassy, High Commission or Consulate.
Advice issued by the FCO regarding tropical cyclones suggests such events - including typhoons and hurricanes - tend to occur in distinct parts of the world at "predictable times of year".
As it can be difficult to accurately predict the strength of the cyclones, tourists should follow local advice at all times.
This could mean leaving an area at short notice if the weather conditions suddenly worsen or if a storm is heading in that direction, the body notes.
