FCO issues advice for Spain's Gay Pride Festival

Madrid plays host to the famous festival

The Spanish festival is likely to draw many tourists to the capital city.

Travel insurance policyholders and others considering heading to Spain for the Gay Pride Festival would be wise to follow advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

The event takes place in Madrid on June 28th-July 3rd and a whole host of attractions are lined up ahead of the main parade on July 2nd.

Guidance from the FCO states: "The festival usually passes without major incident, but as with any big event, you should still be on the look out for petty thieves - who will be attracted by the crowds - and take basic precautions to stay out of trouble."

According to the festival's website, the festivities allow the entire city to come to life, with many of the smaller neighbourhoods joining in with the theme.

Live music and open-air bars take over and the entire week sees a variety of special events to celebrate International Gay Pride Day on July 2nd.

Visitors might like to head to the Chueca district, where chairs and tables will be lined up on the streets and the entire community put on a great display, filled with flags and garlands to show their pride.

This area is said to have "become a trademark for modernity", which may appeal to culture-vultures who want to check out the music, cooking and fashion on offer there all-year-round.

Anyone who does run into trouble during their trip in Spain can find assistance on the FCO's Help for British Nationals page, which offers tips for a variety of circumstances.
