Undertaking winter travel journeys in sub-zero temperatures can damage vehicles paintwork, windscreen wipers and coolant reservoir.
The relentless cold snap that has gripped much of the UK looks set to continue and one expert has suggested motorists take a few moments to look after their car in preparation.
Paul Caller, chief executive officer of Autoglym, said recent winter weather may have already caused problems, so motorists must consider the options for minimising the risk of running into trouble.
Some anti-freeze and screenwash solutions will turn to ice at approximately minus ten degrees C, despite the mercury dropping to lower than minus 15 degrees C in some parts of the UK recently.
Such an event can cause pipes and tubes to split as the liquid expands and contracts as it freezes, which could result in a breakdown situation.
Mr Caller added: "It really pays to use quality de-icer and screenwash products that motorists can be certain will actually perform when they need them."
But it is not just low temperatures that can cause damage to cars, salt and grit on treated road surfaces can corrode paintwork, plastic and rubber, so drivers should try to keep their motor as clean as possible during spells of poor weather.
Travel insurance policyholders hoping to set off in the coming days should keep abreast of forecasts and heed local authority and police advice where it has been issued.
Meanwhile, the
Met Office has released flash warnings of severe or extreme weather for most of Scotland and Northern Ireland, so commuters in those areas could do well to take action now before the predicted snow and ice hits.
