Explore lesser-known spots in Australian Outback

The Outback can be remote

Australia's Outback is packed with beautiful towns and landscapes to view.

Travel insurance policyholders wishing to get an authentic experience when they visit Australia should consider heading to the Outback.

Glynn Jacobs, project manager at visitoutbacknsw.com, suggests the Darling River Run, which visitors can drive through and head along the region's waterways, before going through some quintessential towns.

White Cliffs is a must-see, with tourists given the opportunity to sleep underground at two of the residential spots in the area that is famed for its white opals.

Lightning Ridge is another well-known spot and Mr Jacobs says it is "home to some of the world's most spectacular gemstones, friendly locals and colourful characters".

Black opal is mined in the area, meaning there are plenty of shops selling the product that are just waiting to be explored.

To add to the experience, people might wish to visit the area's opal field, while Walgett contains the Macquarie Marshes Nature Reserve - ideal for wildlife lovers, Mr Jacobs suggests.

More than 211 species of birds have been spotted at the destination, making it an essential stop for those who are fans of the feathered creatures.

Heading out of Broken Hill is Silverton, which Mr Jacobs describes as a "mecca for artists and film-makers".

It used to be a mining town, but the expert now says it is seen as "the Hollywood of the Outback", as its stunning sunsets, original sandstone buildings and red ground make for an impressive sight.

Rodney Harrex, general manager for the UK and northern Europe at Tourism Australia, recently suggested Britons have a love affair with the land down under and will continue to visit it for years to come.
