Expert: UK gearing up for festival season

An expert has said that Britain's love affair with music festivals continues to grow.

The UK public's love affair with summer music festivals looks set to continue in 2010 and beyond, an expert has said.

World-famous and traditionally British events that have been running for many years such as Glastonbury and Reading have been joined on the calendar by a wide range of other diverse and eclectic gatherings in recent years as the demand for festivals throughout the country remains strong.

Even the effects of the global economic downturn have not put revellers off gaining their festival fix, with most major events selling out rapidly after tickets are put up for general sale.

However, the recession has changed the way the public perceive their time at a festival, with many now treating the music events as short holidays by replacing trips abroad with them, according to Virtual Festivals editor Dan Fahey.

There has also been a change in the demographics attending these events, as many festivals now seek to be family-friendly in order to attract parents and children as well as the more traditional crowd of 20-somethings, students and veterans of the circuit.

"We're seeing the first generation of festival-goers returning to their heyday and bringing their family and children with them," said Mr Fahey.

Mr Fahey went on to say that events such as Latitude, Camp Bestival and Wychwood are now incorporating arts and culture into their line-ups in order to attract a more middle-class following.

Britain's festival season gets underway in earnest on Friday (June 11th) when the Isle of Wight bash kicks off. The three-day event is to be headlined by The Strokes, Paul McCartney and Jay-Z.

Those people going to festivals this summer should think about taking out travel insurance before leaving home.

Even if you're travelling within the UK, holiday insurance from Direct Travel Insurance is still a sensible purchase as the expense of dealing with issues on a holiday can be costly in any country.
