Expert: Tourists should consider two weeks in Oman

An industry expert has said that Oman warrants a two-week holiday rather than just a weekend away.

Oman has more than enough to offer to warrant a two-week holiday this summer, the Sultanate of the Middle Eastern nation's ministry of tourism has said.

Following the east coast of the country being hit by cyclone Phet last week, some travellers may have been put off visiting Oman this summer.

However, the government has insisted that it is business as usual for resorts and hotels in the capital of Muscat as the city's international airport and major attractions have not been affected by the natural disaster.

The country's other main tourism hubs, such as Salalah and Khasab have also remained intact, meaning that Oman's primary destinations are all ready and waiting for the seasonal influx of travellers.

Indeed, Oman has seemingly already proved an attractive place to go for many people this year with Muscat being the only city in the Middle East and North African region to record a double-digit occupancy increase year-on-year in 2010.

Alison Cryer, UK and Ireland director of the country's ministry of tourism, advised that although traditional destinations such as Muscat are popular with good reason, those looking to sample a true experience of the Omani lifestyle should visit less well-known areas of the country as well as the capital city.

"Most tourists, sadly still, only really go to Muscat, Nizwa and the Musandam, only some go further afield," she said.

Anyone thinking of visiting Oman this summer should consider taking out travel insurance before leaving the UK to protect against the cost of lost or stolen goods.

Holiday Insurance from Direct Travel Insurance can cover a trip to Oman or other long-haul destinations all for a low price.
