Reading travel blogs might be an ideal way to explore a destination before leaving the house.
Checking travel blogs and other websites is a great way to get inspiration about what countries to visit on a gap year trip.
That is the advice from Rosie Fuller, editor of Adventure Travel Magazine, who explained it would be "a good idea" to examine the experiences of other people who have jetted off to the destination in the past to glean some information about what to expect.
Anyone considering an extended break should take the plunge, according to Ms Fuller. She said: "It will be one of the best experiences you will have."
Planning in advance could help travellers secure cheaper flights and accommodation. On that note, backpacker hostels are sometimes best booked on arrival in a destination, but asking locals for advice could help visitors decide which provide great value for money, but are "still liveable", Ms Fuller continued.
However, visitors to any country could do well to learn about the customs and laws that are in place, which could help travellers avoid becoming "a tourist who is trampling on everything that they do" in that country.
The expert also pointed out that learning the language is a great way to find out more and to help people become integrated with the people living there.
Meanwhile, people buying backpackers insurance for such an excursion might find their CV is boosted on their return.
Adam Pembrey, marketing coordinator at Gapforce, explained that personal development and learning skills in a different country are becoming more popular among people who are over the age of 27.
