Skiing is a popular winter pastime for British holidaymakers.
For people who are heading off on holidays over the next few weeks from the UK, skiing will be the most popular activity, with millions of Brits opting to hit the slopes each winter. While cold winters in the UK chase many sun worshippers to Spain, France and further afield, there is a large call for winter sports holidays, coupled with ski insurance.
ABTA recently reported that 4.25 million Brits will be going overseas this winter, a 250,000 increase on the festive period last year. Many of these will soon be sliding down the mountains of Switzerland and France, but according to one expert, there are many places to travel to avoid the most popular destinations, and the subsequent crowds that go with them.
Nadine Hallak, travel expert for Cheapflights.co.uk said that even in popular venues for skiing like Austria and France, smaller resorts can be found which will be quieter and less bogged down with copious amounts of tourists.
"Snow in [Austria's] Obergurgl is pretty much guaranteed during the winter months – in fact it’s been snowing in Austria’s highest village (elevation of almost 2,000m) since August. This resort is perfect for beginners and intermediates which, along with good ski schools, makes for an excellent family ski holiday destination."
She also went on to say that La Grave in France is an impressive place to visit. However, with vertical drops of 2,100 metres, it is definitely a resort which should be visited only by those who are experienced on mountains, and is not for the faint hearted.
Or for those who want the comfort and assurance of a well tried and tested destination, Ms Hallak said that visiting the ever popular Chamonix in France can bring skiers to some of the most beautiful accommodation in the world, whilst also skiing on Europe's tallest mountain, Mont Blanc.
