Many people in the EU took holidays in their home country and abroad last year, statistics revealed.
Many people around Europe may well have taken out a travel insurance policy and headed on holiday last year.
This is according to data from the European Commission, which claimed residents in the continent made one billion trips in 2010.
The findings were released to mark European Tourism Day on September 27th, with the official EU statistical office Eurostat making the information available.
It discovered half of all these breaks were short domestic trips, with one quarter of the total number being longer trips within the person's home country.
Close to one fifth were taken as long holidays abroad, although the majority of short domestic trips only lasted between one and three nights.
The data indicated Romania had the highest share of trips made in the home country, with 94 per cent of all holidays matching this criteria.
Spain came in next at 92 per cent, while Bulgaria and Greece were found to have 91 per cent of domestic breaks.
Those living in Luxembourg could be considered as the most adventurous, with almost 100 per cent of all their holidays during 2010 classed as outbound.
Belgium, Slovenia, the Netherlands and Austria all had more than 50 per cent of this type of break during the 12-month period.
If residents of these countries decide to come to the UK for a holiday, they may well consider exploring the famous capital city, which is home to numerous attractions that draw in both national and overseas visitors.
Zimena Percival, PR consultant for Walk London's Autumn ambles programme, recently suggested one of the best ways to discover more of the city is to head around on foot.
