Many people feel comfortable in Europe and do not wish to go further afield.
Holidaymakers who want to head to a resort where they feel at ease are likely to remain in Europe.
According to Chris Brown, co-founder of sunshine.co.uk, many Britons like to have their home comforts when on a break, which is why some people avoid going further afield.
"There's a certain element of security that Brits feel when they can just pop to a shop and purchase items they could normally get back home," he claims.
Another advantage is that it only takes a short-haul flight to reach these areas and that could be a deciding factor for a number of individuals.
Once they arrive in their chosen destination, they tend to know what to expect and do not have the risk of being disappointed.
Mr Brown claims this means travel insurance policyholders and others are more likely to have a good time on their trip.
However, he adds: "It's good to venture outside of the comfort zone every now and again."
Turkey is a good option for this, as it offers a certain level of familiarity alongside "something slightly different".
Marmaris is cited as an ideal spot for British holidaymakers, as there is plenty of cuisine to sample and many activities on offer.
Alternatively, Sharm el Skeikh in Egypt could provide an ideal combination of home comforts and culture.
Research from sunshine.co.uk recently found 34 per cent of UK holidaymakers have not ever visited a country outside Europe for a vacation.
And seven per cent admitted they were unsure whether they had ventured outside the continent, which suggests a lack of geographical knowledge, the survey found.
