Mardi Gras in New Orleans is a festival of colour and extravagance.
For people who like partying and celebrating, a trip to the US could be in order to partake in what is known as the world's greatest free party.
In February, New Orleans, Louisiana welcomes the Mardi Gras festival, bringing colour, costumes and parades to the streets of the city for revellers travelling to the US.
However, those who want to partake in the festivities can enjoy festival like celebrations from the early weeks of the year. According to louisianatravel.com, the carnival season traditionally begins on January 6th, the 12th day after Christmas, with various events and attractions all over the state.
For the two weeks leading up to the Mardi Gras celebration itself, various parades will take place in different locations all over the city. Last year, travel insurance customers saw 60 different groups put on parades in the weekends prior to the festival itself.
And on the day itself, back to back processions will fill the streets of New Orleans, as some of the oldest and most traditional parade organisations in the world bring their fares to the streets.
In between parades, UK visitors to New Orleans who enjoy partying and revelling will be able to join in with the thousands of costumed celebrating locals and tourists, as they try and share food from a variety of cultures and enjoy a wide ranging style of music.
People visiting New Orleans may also enjoy taking a journey on the historic Steamboat Natchez, while nature enthusiasts may enjoy embarking on one of the many swamp tours the city has to offer, hoping to spot a range of the wildlife available, such as alligators and snakes.
