Europe offers holidaymakers plenty of culture - and is easy on the wallet.
Destinations such as Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania have risen in popularity since the recession and one travel site director noted that many Eastern European nations offer the "best of both worlds".
Francesca Ecsery, global sales director of Cheapflights.co.uk, asserted that British visitors may find these countries appealing because they are outside of the eurozone, but still benefit from being just a short-haul flight away.
She added that many places in Eastern Europe "offer something new" for British travellers, such as taking in the medieval castles in Estonia or enjoying a night out in Latvia, which is known for its clubbing scene.
"Culture rich Latvia and Estonia offer an abundance of striking, centuries-old architecture and picturesque coastlines," Ms Ecsery pointed out, adding that they are also budget-friendly compared with many other destinations.
The UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office recommends that comprehensive
travel insurance be taken out before taking a holiday in Estonia.
