More people now see the positives of holidaying at home.
An increased number of people are now seeing the positives that can be found through taking a holiday in the UK, rather than heading overseas for the summer sun. Thanks to the recession, and the continued squeeze on what people can afford to spend, the trend of staycationing has seen more and more people stay in the UK, and one expert said that this has allowed people the chance to see what the country really has to offer.
According to Peter Hampson, chief executive at British Destinations, said people are now more open to continuing to holiday across the UK in the future, even if they find that they can afford to go overseas again in the future. The expert noted that it is likely that people could start to buy travel insurance for both kinds of trips, instead of just solely holidaying overseas as they did in the past.
"Those families who had traditionally just done nothing else but holiday abroad have suddenly discovered you don't have to go 800 miles away to find mountains, or do X, Y and Z. If you want a tropical beach holiday you aren't going to get one here, so go abroad for it. But, if you want to go walking in mountains, or have a nice family holiday in the summer on the beach, you can do it in England."
Mr Hampson also said that people do not have to see themselves as either a staycationer or a vacationer, with it not being a competition between the two. He advised holiday makers to continue with a kind of variety to what they are doing with their holidays.
Earlier this year, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) said in its Travel Trends report that there would be an increase in people looking for value for money trips which offer them activities and excitement beyond lying on a beach, which the UK certainly can.
