Swedish city Gothenburg could see an increase in tourism numbers when easyJet begins flying there from September, an expert has predicted.
An expert has said today (June 7th) that Gothenburg will become a popular destination with British holidaymakers later this year.
As of September, easyJet will be offering flights to the Swedish city from Gatwick airport, meaning that the destination could become a common resort for Brits looking for a cultured weekend away.
Since budget airlines have become a major player in the air travel market, European cities such as Prague have become increasingly popular with UK tourists looking for a cost-effective holiday.
And Phillipa Sutton, public relations manager at Visit Sweden UK, believes that Gothenburg could follow suit when it becomes more easily - and cheaply - accessible from London.
"Gothenburg is a port city so it has real maritime history. Their speciality is seafood such as oysters and lobsters," she said.
Ms Sutton added that the Feskekorka and Salinhallen food markets are essential visiting spots for fans of all things gastronomic, while tourists can also catch their own supper by participating in the city's archipelago lobster safari.
Away from food, the six-day annual Gothenburg cultural festival is also a must-see event for visitors, as the streets and squares of the city are transformed into celebratory hubs of music and art. The festival, which runs between August 10th and 15th this year, attracts around 700,000 visitors annually.
Meanwhile, Ms Sutton added that Gothenburg has now become a major focus for the European food community, with eating places in the city ranging from Michelin-starred restaurants to average cafes.
Anyone planning to visit Gothenburg should consider taking out
travel insurance before leaving the UK.
