Eastern European countries may offer some of the best value for money when it comes to taking a budget break.
Countries in eastern Europe which are not linked to the euro offer good cheap holiday deals for Britons, an expert has said.
People wishing to save money after buying their
travel insurance were urged by Bob Atkinson of Travelsupermarket to try Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria.
He explained that since these countries use their own currency, they can be "astronomically cheap" for Britons who are more accustomed to dealing with sterling.
Mr Atkinson said that these places are not affected by the rise of the euro against the pound.
Holiday activities such as eating out or buying gifts are therefore much cheaper than they would be at home or in places such as Spain that have adopted the euro.
Mr Atkinson was speaking after data from Teletext Holidays found that 57 per cent of Britons say they cannot afford a holiday because of the recession.
This is despite the fact that 68 per cent badly want to take a break and a quarter of people are intending to take a last-minute trip.
