Black ice is causing further problems on the roads
Dangerous black ice is causing more chaos on the country's roads, following the heavy snow and freezing conditions of the past few weeks.
Central Scotland Police has issued a warning to road users about the risks of driving, with more motorists heading on journeys as the snow begins to thaw.
Head of Road Policing Chief Inspector Donald McMillan said: "The M9, M876 and slip roads into Stirling are particularly badly affected and we are asking motorists to take extra care on these surfaces and only travel if they have to."
Compacted ice is proving to be equally treacherous and Mr McMillan explained the conditions are varying greatly between areas, so it is important to understand how each region is being affected, he added.
According to the Manchester Evening News, this was also a problem in north-west England, with a pile up involving 50 vehicles in Wigan occurring yesterday morning (December 9th).
The East Lancs Road was the scene of the accident, with police saying the incident resulted from a short rain shower that froze on the road.
This led to "treacherous" driving conditions, with motorists still being advised to take extra care when making their way around the area.
And the Liverpool Echo reported dozens of crashes occurred on the M62 at the same time yesterday, with many road users "losing control on black ice", causing disruption on the motorway and miles of tailbacks.
A police spokeswoman said: "Our advice is do not make a journey unless it is absolutely necessary."
