A DIY holiday should include the relevant cover.
Creating a "DIY holiday" can enable consumers to choose exactly where they want to go and when, without having to pay extra for elements they are not interested in.
However,
travel insurance and relevant financial protection should not be forgotten in these cases, an expert warned recently.
A spokesperson for the Association of Independent Tour Operators, commenting on Ryanair's new base in Malaga and the potential opportunities for cheap flights this presents, said although a wider selection of routes is always a good thing, people should remember how important it is to cover any expenditure.
"The temptation to create DIY holidays, by booking flights and accommodation separately, does not offer the protection in case something goes wrong," he explained.
Those with
single trip insurance or annual trip insurance may have already discovered the importance of such protection - but consumers planning to jet off on a DIY break without considering it face the risk of a large payout should a problem occur.
Comments from AITO come days after Mike Powell, insight analyst on general insurance for Defaqto, discussed
travel insurance and the age considerations that may need to be taken into account.
He said the reason for a difference in premium price is the varying risk of a medical expenses claim from demographic to demographic, because older holidaymakers may be more likely to require healthcare while abroad.
Mr Powell pointed out that there are competitive prices on the market for those who want to get the most suitable policy.
