Britons saved a collective £4.92 billion in 2009 by booking their holidays directly rather than going through an agent, according to new research.
A new study has revealed that 11.6 million people saved significant amounts of money last year by avoiding travel agents and booking their holidays directly.
The survey by Santander Cards found that these Britons saved a collective £4.92 billion by going online or calling the provider in question when booking flights and accommodation.
Most of these travellers saved £423 on average compared with buying a package holiday with 3.3 million saving at least £500.
Almost half of holidaymakers said they saved money by booking online.
Searching for cheap
travel insurance could also reduce holiday costs.
Emma Roberts, director of Santander Cards, remarked: "It's not surprising that in the current economic climate, holidaymakers are increasingly looking for value and are prepared to do the homework themselves in order to get the best deal."
About one-quarter of Britons intend to reduce their holiday spending by up to 50 per cent in 2010, according to a recent study by IMRG and eDigitalResearch.
