Diabetics 'should take travel precautions'
While people with diabetes should not let the condition get in the way of their holiday, things will go more safely and smoothly with a bit of extra preparation.
Accredited dietician Tania Ferraretto told WA Today that people with diabetes should maintain their usual exercise and diet routines before travelling, as this will give them the chance to see their GP if anything seems amiss before they leave.
She added that diabetics - especially if they are new to managing the condition - may also wish to meet with a dietician, who can help them pre-plan their meals and offer information about carbohydrate intake.
The news source emphasised that adequate travel insurance is a must for diabetics and noted holidaymakers should check if their condition is included and if it covers the destination they are travelling to.
People with the condition have also been advised to contact the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) before they go on holiday to get the details of the diabetes organisation in the country they are going to.
The IDF estimates that over 250 million people around the world have diabetes, with a further seven million developing the condition each year.
