People still want to go abroad, they just want to pay less.
People in the UK will be looking to take holidays abroad in 2012, rather than conforming to what many believe is the best way to save money when taking a holiday and just travelling around the UK.
Thomas Cook has released the details of a new survey, in which it has said that 33 per cent of Brits will still be looking to take a holiday this summer abroad, in spite of the financial constraints which continue to limit the amount of money that people have to spend.
This figure is also surprising given that it is one per cent higher than at the same time last year.
However, while a greater proportion of people are looking to head overseas to soak up sun this year, 20 per cent of those who responded to the survey said that they would definitely be looking to spend less on their travelling in 2012.
People buying travel insurance are also going to be spending less time holidaying at home this year, with the survey saying that 17 per cent of Brits plan to holiday at home. This is also one per cent lower than in 2011.
Recently, the Association of British Travel Agents said that increasingly tightening financial belts mean that those travelling this year will spend more on the cheapest holidays as well as those which offer the best and most unique experiences, with mid range breaks taking the biggest financial hit.
Thomas Cook chief executive mainstream Ian Ailles told Travel Mole: "People will need to budget more carefully in order to afford a holiday, they are shopping around to make sure they get the best deal, but the good news for us and for the industry is that a holiday has moved back up to being the number one priority."
