The number of people who went on a cruise last year rose by four per cent compared with 2008, according to new figures.
New statistics have revealed that 1.53 million UK travellers took a cruise last year, representing a four per cent increase compared with 2008.
The figures from the Passenger Shipping Association (PSA) also indicate a seven per cent rise in the number of people who boarded their cruise at a UK port, with a two per cent increase in those who flew to their departure point being recorded.
Popular cruise destinations included the Mediterranean - which accounted for 39 per cent of the total market - along with northern Europe and the Caribbean.
According to the PSA, it is likely that some 1.65 million Britons will go on a cruise in 2010.
William Gibbons, director of the PSA, said the rise in the number of cruise-goers detected last year could be linked to "the all-inclusive nature of cruising and the very high standards of quality and service".
While cruises include accommodation and other elements of a typical holiday, Britons may want to ensure they look for separate
travel insurance for peace of mind.
The last year has seen a number of cases of illness-stricken cruise ships make the headlines.
