Crete is a "Mediterranean gem"
The island of Crete is a "Mediterranean gem" and for those willing to leave the comfort of their sun lounger it has an "amazing array" of places to see, a travel site has said.
Duncan McGregor, writing for Skyscanner, explained: "The choice of beaches in Crete is unmatched by any Greek island."
Mr McGregor suggested hiring a car and taking a road map to explore some of the best beaches the island has to offer.
He suggested a trip to the far western side of the island on the Gramavoussa peninsula to Balos Beach - which is the "most picturesque and photographed beach in the world" - he added.
It is also shallow enough in the lagoon to allow children to play safely and is also an ideal sport for snorkelling and scuba diving, he continued.
Vai beach, famous from the Bounty chocolate adverts, is another favourite spot of Mr McGregor's. It is one of the largest beaches in Europe and is naturally fringed by a palm tree forest.
Crete is the largest of the Greek Islands, measuring 160 miles by 35 miles at its widest point.
