A trip to take in the World Cup in South Africa this year is likely to be the holiday of a lifetime for many because of the costs involved, it has been suggested.
Britons thinking about travelling to South Africa for this year's World Cup may find it highly expensive, it has been warned.
According to Lonely Planet travel editor Tom Hall, it is likely many people will have to turn the holiday into a "trip of a lifetime" because of the large amount of money needed for such a journey.
His comments came after Virgin Money's Football Fans' Inflation Index suggested that keen football fans looking to attend every single football match at the World Cup will have to spend £6,399 to do so.
Despite this, Mr Hall says that there are ways and means of cutting the cost of a trip to the World Cup, such as finding cheap flights to other destinations in Africa and driving to the host city of their choice in South Africa.
"Bear in mind that you can often camp and self-cater, which keeps the costs down. The biggest costs are match tickets and flights," he explains.
Looking for cheap
travel insurance could also help to minimise holiday spending.
