The Met Office has predicted more snow and widespread ice, which could cause further travel chaos.
The cold snap that is currently gripping Britain looks set to continue, which could result in further travel chaos for commuters in the country.
The
Met Office has predicted more snow and widespread ice is on its way and it has warned the combination of rain and sleet will make driving conditions and pavement surfaces treacherous.
Chief forecaster Steve Willington said: "The mix of freezing temperatures, rain and sleet brings a significant risk of ice on roads and pavements leading to dangerous conditions out and about."
Frozen surfaces can become exceptionally slippery when additional snow lies on top and Northern Ireland, Wales and central and southern Britain should anticipate ice as a result of these conditions.
Furthermore, salt and grit can be less effective during times when temperatures are much lower than normal and the
Highways Agency has also issued a warning for drivers to take care.
Overhanging trees, bends in the road and steep gradients can all create locations where ice is more likely, so travel insurance policyholders setting off on holiday this week should still take extra care on their journey.
Keeping abreast of weather changes is the best way to prepare for such an excursion, the organisation has stated and commuters can avoid misery by checking the traffic situation on the internet or via local radio stations.
Stocking the car with a shovel, blankets, jump leads, a scraper and de-icer as well as a torch and some food and drink as part of an emergency kit could prove essential on a journey interrupted by sudden and severe weather.
