Travellers should use a mixture of cash and cards while abroad, it has been advised.
Holidaymakers would do well to use a combination of cards and cash while overseas, the Post Office has recommended.
Cash is important to pay for costs like drinks and taxis, as well as for most purchases in places where cards are not widely accepted, explained head of Post Office Travel Services Sarah Munro.
However, because there is a security risk attached to carrying around large amounts of cash, a prepaid currency card may be a viable alternative, she suggested.
"For those who prefer the flexibility offered by credit cards, we urge people to save money by choosing a product which does not charge them any commission for overseas usage," Ms Munro added.
The comments came after Santander conducted a survey showing that 52 per cent of Britons mainly use cash while on holiday, compared with 20 per cent who utilise credit cards.
It may be advisable to take out
travel insurance before setting off to cover costs - such as medical expenses - that may be too high to be covered by either cash or cards.
