Cold weather haters abandon the UK for sunnier climes.
As the weather in the UK begins to get gradually colder, more and more Brits are buying travel insurance and heading abroad to catch some winter sun and top up their ever fading tans.
According to car hire specialist eRentals.co.uk , the drop in temperatures in the UK has led to an increase in the number of rentals it has seen in its sunnier destinations.
The company says that places such as the Canary Islands, Florida and the south of Spain have seen rises in visitors chasing the late December sun.
ERentals.co,uk has reported a 20 per cent increase this month in the number of British holidaymakers heading abroad and renting its vehicles.
Briony Fairbairn of eRentals.co.uk says: "Since the temperature dropped in the UK there's been a jump in the number of travellers coming to us for winter sun destinations. It's as if the reality of a British winter has hit home and there's a need to break up the long winter slog with at least a few days of sunshine."
Last week, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) reported that more Brits were heading overseas this winter than they did last, with 4.25 million expected to head off over the Christmas period alone, as ski resorts and sunnier climes look to be the favoured destinations for those taking a winter trip.
The car hire company eRentals.co.uk said that the most popular holiday lengths at this time of year are the four or five day breaks, as Brits look to enjoy a short trip to break the freezing weather up, as opposed to a full on holiday.
"With some great deals to be had on car hire, accommodation and flights over the winter, for many it's the perfect winter pick me up," said Ms Fairbairn.
