Heathrow expects to return to normal after a weekend of cancelled flights.
While many people may have been flying out of the UK over the weekend with their winter travel insurance policies tucked in their pockets, ready to hit the snow on the ski slopes across Europe and other parts of the world, it has been the white stuff back home which has caused disruption for many, with authorities saying they are only now hoping to return to normal service across airports in the UK.
Yesterday (February 5th), Heathrow cancelled almost half of all flights out of the airport, thanks to the snow, with anger coming from passengers who found flights had been refused clearance to take off even up to nine hours before any snow had fallen.
It was thought, according to the Daily Telegraph, that some 18,000 passengers were affected by the lack of flights out of Heathrow Airport over the course of the weekend.
However, the airport has now announced that it will have reopened today, despite the fact that there is expected to be a backlog which will require clearing, with the BAA promising to do all that it can to get air travel back on course over the first few days of this week.
A spokesman for the airport said this morning: "Heathrow is open and our usual flight schedule is operating today. There will, however, be a handful of cancellations as result of yesterday’s disruption. Please check your flight before travelling to the airport."
Last winter, as much of the UK saw a cold snap which lasted more than two months, travel disruption had been commonplace, but many would have hoped that the airports across the country would have learned their lesson, and been prepared for this. Travellers will also be hoping that this is the end of the travel chaos, and will be nervously looking at Met Office predictions today which said that the cold snap could last a full month.
