Families looking to channel the Christmas spirit might enjoy the activities that have been arranged in Iceland.
Families looking to celebrate Christmas in style could jet off to Iceland where festive holidays are "taken extremely seriously", according to an expert.
A total of 13 days are set aside to mark the occasion between December 24th 2010 and January 6th 2011, when the streets and houses are decorated and markets are arranged in the city of Reykjavik.
Sigga Groa Porarinsdottir, area manager for UK and Ireland from Visit Iceland, said: "There is a great sense of Christmas spirit throughout the country making it an ideal place for a Christmas break and one of the hottest winter wonderlands."
Homemade chocolates, food and decorations are available at the aforementioned market - called Heidmork - and children's hour is held at 14:00 local time every day when Father Christmas makes an appearance, the youngsters can get involved with games and huddle around outdoor fires to hear stories being told by local authors.
Adventurous holiday insurance policyholders can trek out to the snow-covered plains and mountains where waterfalls "bound in ice" are "nothing short of spectacular", according to the official.
The Northern Lights could penetrate the sky, enthralling the visitors to the country with their "surreal" nature - they may be most visible to travellers that have embarked on a 4x4 safari out into the Arctic.
However, people looking to book flights to the nation should do so soon, as figures from Visit Iceland have shown the number of passengers from the UK has increased by 7.5 per cent during October when compared with the same month last year.
