The Windy City is ideal for those who want to go on a cosmopolitan break
Chicago has seen a good year in terms of tourism numbers throughout 2011, as an increasing number of people see the benefits of the city for getting away on a very cosmopolitan break.
According to the Chicago Convention & Tourism Bureau, the attendance numbers in its hotels and museums have remained very steady throughout the year as it continues to perform well.
The bureau, which is the main promoter of the Windy City to tourists, said that the city has something for everyone, and even has a few unexpected tricks up its sleeve.
"People don't realise that we have over 200 theatres in the city of Chicago – it's been said it has to run in Chicago before it goes on in New York. The Guardian actually wrote a couple of years back that Chicago rivals [New York] for theatre," said Cathleen Domanico, executive director of tourism for the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau.
She went on to say that the city offers a number of Broadway shows and has won five Tony awards for its productions.
Theatres in Chicago are currently showing a host of impressive plays for those looking to buy travel insurance before they travel stateside, including A Christmas Story, the Musical, A Christmas Carol, and the world-renowned Blue Man Group.
The Windy City also offers the chance for those who want an alternative to the now traditional Christmas shopping trip to New York, with its upmarket Magnificent Mile, and the vertical mall.
Ms Domanico said that Chicago hosted its first shopping festival this year, which attracted many new visitors to the city looking for a spot of high end retail therapy.
