Avoid roaming charges by getting a special sim before travelling abroad.
Those who are travelling for a quick break overseas should make sure that they check with their mobile phone network provider before travelling to ensure that they are not hit with a shockingly large bill when they return from their trip.
According to one expert, the world of roaming, where a mobile phone in a foreign country will pick up a local provider, can be an expensive one, as no one can accurately predict how much it will cost to use these providers when overseas.
Steve Kenny, founder of Simcards.co.uk, said the best way to avoid the nightmare of an unexpectedly high bill when returning from a holiday is to discuss options with providers before embarking.
He says that most mobile networks will provide a bolt on which can be temporarily added to keep the cost of using a phone abroad reasonably low for those with travel insurance.
Mr Kenny advised those who are frequent travellers to opt for a specialist sim card to protect themselves and give peace of mind when overseas.
"These sim cards work in most countries and call charges and data usage are considerably less than you would pay your domestic provider. You'll need to make sure your mobile or smartphone is unlocked and not tied to a specific network," he added.
The expert said that people who do not realise their mobile is connecting to the internet while they are overseas can find themselves with the most significant bills. Data use abroad can cost £8 per megabyte, and this can easily escalate, as many phones will automatically check Facebook, emails and maps whilst they are apparently off.
He advises people to make sure mobile data is turned off when they are not in the country to be safe.
