The availability of cheap holidays to exotic destinations is one reason why travellers ignore vaccinations, an expert has said.
One reason for the fact that 44 per cent of travellers do not research vaccinations before going abroad is the rising availability of low-cost holidays to long-haul destinations, it has been suggested.
Commenting on a recent Post Office reporting highlighting ignorance of the need to get vaccinated by British travellers and the effect this can have on
holiday insurance, Dr Peter Swinyard of the Family Doctor Association said more should be done to raise awareness of the issue.
"Places which are considered exotic in terms of health risks have become cheaper and easier to get to and people are not even registering the thought that they need something," he remarked.
He urged travellers to see their practice nurse or GP at least six weeks before they set off.
Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2010 guide suggests that some of the most popular destinations next year will include El Salvador, Germany, Greece and Malaysia.
