A new Santander poll shows cash is the favoured method of payment for UK travellers.
Britons heading abroad rely the most on cash as a method of payment, according to a new survey.
The study by Santander shows that 52 per cent of those who went overseas last year used cash for most of their purchases.
One-fifth utilised a credit card, while 15 per cent opted to make use of a debit card.
Just five per cent of respondents said they used travellers' cheques or had a foreign currency account.
Vim Maru, director of retail products at Santander UK, said the study raised some concerns about the safety of carrying large amounts of cash while overseas.
He commented: "One, is it safe to carry large sums of money and two, is cash the cheapest way to pay for items whilst out of the UK?"
Travel insurance could be one way of cutting costs while on holiday, especially if medical treatment is required.
However, research from the Post Office suggests that one-fifth of holidaymakers do not take out
travel insurance before setting off.
