New walkers may emerge because of financial restraints.
Due to the financial restraints which are still forcing many people to look at cutting their overall spending, there could be an increase in the number of people who choose to take their holidays in Britain this year.
This could see a growth in a market which has often been popular with those who enjoy holidaying in the UK, and that is walking and rambling. The activity attracts high levels of people to venture out across many different tracks and trek throughout the country every year, but with an increase in potential newcomers, it is important to make sure that travel insurance customers are taking the necessary precautions to protect themselves before they head out this year.
According to Des De Moor, the Ramblers' senior everyday walking officer, preparation is key to making sure a walking holiday does not turn into a disaster, with maps and warm clothing among the most important items to pack before heading off this year.
"Good, practical footwear and several layers of clothing, including a waterproof top layer, are comfort essentials anywhere and particularly important in rougher countryside."
He also said that those who are walking in an area they are unfamiliar with would also do well to take a map with them to make sure that they do not get lost when they are out this winter. He said that they can act as an effective form of backup, as many people will now be carrying GPS devices, but these can easily lose signal or battery power, leaving walkers without a clue where they are.
"Also important are drinking water and food and a small first aid kit," he added.
