Cape Town 'has backpacker appeal'
Backpackers may be drawn to Cape Town for its "diverse offerings", according to the chairman of the South Africa Youth Travel Confederation (SAYTC).
The organisation's Gavin Eyre said that the city, along with the country's Western Cape, is a "place of many possibilites" which are "sure to speak to the typical youth traveller", according to Travel Daily News.
In response to figures from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation published in 2008 highlighting the increasing popularity of youth travel, SAYTC has teamed up with Cape Town Routes Unlimited and the South African Tourism Services Association to raise the profile of the region.
Travelwires.com recently reported that more travel organisations in the country are seeking certification from Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa - including a shark-cage diving operation, a marine life tours company and Grootbos Private Nature Reserve.
According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, backpackers should ensure their travel insurance policy covers wildlife activities or extreme adventure sports before they set out on their South African holiday.
