Bulgaria 'named 2009 best value holiday resort'
Bulgaria has overtaken holiday favourites such as Thailand, Egypt and South Africa as best value 2009 holiday destination by the Post Office.
The annual Holiday Costs Barometer by the company compared the prices of ten common holiday items such as food and drink across 18 different destinations and found Bulgaria to be the best value at £42.
Coming out at the most expensive was Antigua, with items costing two and a half times more than the eastern European resort.
Located outside of the eurozone, Turkey and Croatia were also among the cheapest holiday destinations for travel insurance customers this year.
However, according to head of travel services at the company Sarah Munro, traditional European destinations are cutting prices to attract holidaymakers put off by exchange rates.
"Despite the weak pound, this means that UK tourists who shop carefully could find that they get more than expected for their money," explained Ms Munro.
According to travel company Trivago, the cost of the average hotel room in Barcelona dropped by ten per cent between February and March this year to £93 per night.
