Brits 'want to make more of an effort to learn the local language'
A survey carried out by On the Beach found that 91 per cent of UK holidaymakers enjoyed spending time with the locals in their holiday destination and 87 per cent said they preferred local bars to British pubs.
However, one thing Britons could do with brushing up on once their travel insurance is in place, is the local language.
Some 72 per cent of UK travellers admitted that other than "hello" and "thank you" they could not communicate in the local language and 97 per cent felt that they could make more of an effort to learn.
"Not only can it be very useful, the locals really do appreciate it when foreigners make the effort [with the language]," explained Simon Cooper, chief executive officer of the company.
According to figures published today (July 8th) from Mintel, the most popular holidays now taken by people from the UK are couples holidays - accounting for 40 per cent of trips taken over the past five years - compared to family holidays at 37 per cent.
