Brits 'unsure of where to get help' if travel companies fail
The importance of comprehensive travel insurance has been highlighted in a study that indicated one in ten people thought they were always entitled to a free flight home if their holiday company went bust.
According to research from YouGov on behalf of the Department for Transport, 67 per cent of travellers from London did not always make sure their holiday was protected when booked on the internet.
"It's only very occasionally that holidays go wrong, but smart planning can make all the difference in helping you return home with minimal problems and expense," said transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick.
Some 67 per cent of people also said they would not know who to go to for advice in the event of a holiday company or airline running into trouble.
Cover for holidaymakers can vary depending on whether travel was booked independently or as a package deal - which are generally protected under the Atol scheme.
According to DirectGov, individuals who have booked a package holiday will be protected and flown home if their airline fails.
