Brits 'heading to more distant destinations'
Many people from the UK are spending a lot more on their holiday plans this year by opting for long-haul destinations, a new report has revealed.
Jonathan Cudworth, head of product marketing at Expedia.co.uk, said his company had seen an increase in the numbers of travellers heading to destinations such as Dubai, Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand.
"People are spending a lot more money on their travel in terms of going to places a lot further away but tending to go to places where their money goes further," he explained.
Brits are looking for value for money when it comes to eating and drinking out, but are willing to spend more on their hotel and on getting to their destination, he continued.
According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, travellers heading to Australia without adequate travel insurance could face costs of between £15,000 and 20,000 for a scheduled flight, stretcher and doctor escort should anything go wrong.
