Best NZ waterfalls revealed

Waterfalls in New Zealand could be popular

Author Russell Kirkpatrick has revealed some of his favourite waterfalls in New Zealand.

Jet-setters planning to take out travel insurance so they can explore New Zealand may wish to witness some of the country's best waterfalls, as featured in a new book Walks to Waterfalls by cartographer Russell Kirkpatrick.

This rundown of his favourite cascades include Mangatini Falls, found on the Charming Creek walkway and accessed either inland of Seddonville or from Ngakawau, Stuff reports.

To get here, people can choose to make their way down the five-hour walkway - which follows a disused railway that closed in 1958 after extracting coal and timber for 46 years - or they may prefer to take a bit of a shortcut and get to the 30m waterfall from the Hector end, which should take about an hour.
Another of Kirkpatrick's favourites includes Marokopa Falls, arguably one of the finest to be found in the entire country.

For a great - albeit fixed - view of this attraction, head to the lookout platform, the writer advised.

"After your senses adjust to the exhilaration, you begin to notice the details, including the patterns of spray on bedrock, moss-wreathed greywacke boulders at the base of the falls and the various paths the water picks through the obstacles," he continued, adding that he visits this waterfall a couple of times a year.

People might also like to head to Fiordland on their hunt for some of the best waterfalls in the country. The area is ripe for hiking and holidaymakers are sure to have a great time if they head down the Routeburn, Kepler or Milford tracks.

This latter one is perhaps the most famous in New Zealand, taking travellers past mountains, lakes, valleys and the Sutherlaand falls - the tallest waterfall in the country.
