Backpackers should plan ahead to know what activities their travel insurance policy needs to cover.
Backpackers should have a good idea of the kind of activities they plan to do during their time away in order to buy the
travel insurance policy most suited to their needs, according to the founder of gapyear.com.
Tom Griffiths said that it is important for gap year holidaymakers to make sure their travel insurance provider knows all the necessary details of their trip, as well as any existing medical conditions they may have.
He added that travel insurance is an essential purchase to make before taking a holiday, but some 25 per cent of backpackers run the risk of travelling under-insured or uninsured.
"With insurance, the vital thing is you've got to get out there and forecast for everything you think you're going to do on your trip," he stated, adding many people have the misconception that travel insurance is only required for extreme activities, such as white water rafting.
According to the International Currency Exchange, students and gap year travellers should also make sure they are protected against theft and card fraud while on their year out.
